Machine-Crafted or Milled Log Homes
Machine-crafted, or milled, log homes first appeared in the 1920s. Most log homes today are machine crafted because they require less labor-intensive fieldwork.
As the name implies, the logs for a machine-crafted log home are processed by a machine, which creates wall logs that are uniform in size and have a smooth surface. The wall logs can be either full round, Swedish cope, or even dovetail. At Rocky Mountain Log Homes, Swedish cope logs include our Weather Lock spline and gasket system.
The most common style in milled log home construction is Swedish-cope with saddle-notch corners. The manufacturing process of milled logs converts them into timbers that are consistent in appearance and size. For a more rustic or handcrafted appearance, the logs can be draw knifed.
